Format Information
When sending an attachment, the file name must be
no longer than eight letters, excluding the three
letter extension (MS-DOS format).
All formats must include their respective three-letter
extensions.
MEFAX makes every attempt to support as many file
formats as possible, however MEFAX cannot support
all file formats.
At this time, MEFAX does not directly support Office
97 products.
It is highly recommended that you test the documents
you plan to send through MEFAX.
MEFAX currently does not support all Machintosh
documents in the listed formats.
Sending a Fax with Extended Characters
Within the TXT format and the text of an e-mail,
MEFAX can properly translate the US ASCII and the
ISO-8859-1 character sets, including characters
used in most Western European languages such as
accented letters and foreign currency symbols. This
character set covers the following languages:
Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Faeroese, French,
German, Galician, Irish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Persian,
Portugese, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil.
MEFAX cannot support any other character sets such
as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean alphabets
within word processing documents/ text attachments.
Usage Reports
MEFAX will always send a reply regarding the success
or failure of each fax transmission. The confirmation
reply will indicate the transmission duration.
MEFAX makes four attempts, a minimum of 3 minutes
apart, before notifying the customer of a failure.
MEFAX does not charge for failed transmissions.
Common MEFAX Questions/Troubleshooting
Do
I need a different Software for using MEFAX ?
No.
You use your existing email software. You will not
need any additional software. To send a fax via
Email you compose your fax message just like you
would compose an ordinary email message. In the
To: field you put in the fax number including the
country code, area code etc. suffixed by "@faxaway.com".
For details refer to the section on "
Using MEFAX ".
Do
I have to pay the regular International Rates for
the fax messages that I send ??
No.
The purpose of this service is to provide users with a
facility to send faxes via email at very low costs. Please
refer to the section on "prices"
for details.
How
long does a fax take to send?
Once
your e-mail message has reached MEFAX Gateway, the
first attempt of the fax occurs in approximately
twenty minutes.
Transmission
time of the fax depends on several factors, such
as, the type/size of the file sent, international
phone lines, the receiving fax machine, and error
correction.
Does
MEFAX work with all fax machines?
MEFAX
can communicate with all Group 2, Group 3 and CBF
fax machines (most fax machines are Group 3; Group
1 machines are collectors items by now). MEFAX is
not compatible with manual fax machines, or fax
machines that double as telephone answering machines.
MEFAX
must hear a fax tone when the receiving line is
answered in order to send a fax.
The
fax I sent was garbled. What is wrong?
Garbled
faxes can occur for many reasons:
- The
encoding used was not compatible with MEFAX.
We accept most types of UUencode, BinHex, and
MIME. (fax output has nonsense characters)
- The
attached file sent was not a supported format.
(fax output has nonsense characters)
- The
receiving fax machine was dirty, or broken,
and carrier line used. (lines run together,
or are missing)
Does
MEFAX have password protection ??
In
order to authenticate users and provide resonable
security users are required to use a password while
sending faxes via MEFAX. The password will be the
first field in the "Subject" line.
Example
If
your password for MEFAX was "mylock123"
and you want to send a fax to 9771225407, then your
"To" and "Subject" lines would
look like this.
To:
9771225407@faxaway.com
Subject: mylock123 Testing the Password feature
Here
the first field of the Subject line is taken as
the password and the rest will be taken as the Subject.
In this particular case the password is "mylock123"
and the subject is "Testing the Password Feature".
NOTE:
During the fax transmission, MEFAX will remove the
password from the subject line and fax rest of the
message.
